Practitioner Feedback
What Practitioners Say About Learning Organic Acids Interpretation
Real feedback from healthcare professionals and students who wanted to understand the biochemistry behind organic acid testing—not simply memorize individual markers.
Dr. Gail Clayton’s organic acids interpretation training emphasizes the metabolic pathways, biochemical relationships, and clinical context behind organic acid markers. Rather than treating an Organic Acids Test as a list of isolated high and low values, the course teaches practitioners to ask why a marker has changed and how it connects to the rest of metabolism.
The comments below come from post-course evaluations. They are shown in participants’ own words; where a comment has been shortened, an ellipsis (…) marks the omission. Names are withheld to protect participants’ privacy.

Biochemistry
From Memorizing Markers to Understanding the Biochemistry
Every organic acid on a report is an intermediate or by-product of a specific metabolic pathway. Understanding the pathway—the enzymes, cofactors, and neighboring reactions involved—is what turns a flagged number into useful clinical information. A recurring theme in practitioner feedback is this shift from recognizing individual markers to seeing the pathways and patterns behind them.

Confidence
Greater Confidence Interpreting Organic Acid Tests
Many participants describe feeling better prepared to read an organic acids report, explain what it shows, and use it to inform care. That confidence comes from understanding how each marker fits into metabolism, rather than relying on a summary of what high and low values are said to mean. For a free starting point, the Organic Acids Test Interpretive Guide outlines common markers alongside their pathways and nutrient cofactors.

Patterns & Context
Going Beyond High Values
A laboratory reference range shows whether a value falls inside or outside a statistical range; it does not explain what that value means for a particular person. Advanced organic acids interpretation looks at patterns, relationships between markers, and clinical context. That is why a low value—or a marker that seems unremarkable on its own—can carry as much meaning as one that is flagged high.

What Experienced Practitioners Discovered
Many participants were already ordering organic acid tests or comprehensive nutritional panels before taking the training. Their feedback shows that practitioners with prior experience also reported learning new material.

Depth
A Detailed, Advanced Approach to Organic Acids
The Organic Acids Interpretation Course is designed for practitioners who want to understand the biochemistry underlying organic acid markers rather than rely only on simplified marker lists. Participants often describe the training as detailed and thorough. The emphasis is on building a working understanding of the biochemistry, so that practitioners can reason through results rather than look them up.
“

Curriculum
How Student Feedback Has Shaped the Curriculum
Course evaluations are read for more than testimonials. Constructive suggestions from participants are reviewed and used to guide how Dr. Clayton develops her educational materials.
Recurring requests from participants have included:
- More foundational biochemistry for learners who are newer to organic acids or want a refresher before the advanced material
- More case examples, including complete OAT reports to follow from start to finish
- Pathway overviews and visual aids that show how the main metabolic pathways connect
- Reference materials such as glossaries, handouts, and easier ways to look up individual markers
In response to requests for more foundational content, Dr. Clayton incorporated a dedicated basic biochemistry section into her related amino acids training. Other suggestions continue to inform ongoing curriculum development.
For practitioners who want worked examples, The Interpreter’s Casebook presents organic acids interpretation through case studies.
In participants’ words
“… A case study example to tie it all together would be a nice addition.” — Healthcare Practitioner
“… going over the main pathways and ultimately what they do would be helpful.” — Healthcare Practitioner
“I would include a glossary with definitions of some of the biology and chemistry terms used in the course. …” — Course Participant
